Adoption

Placing for adoption is a courageous and loving decision. First Care will help you weigh the pros and cons of adoption, meeting with you as often as needed, to explore if adoption is an option for you.

It's your choice.

At First Care we encourage you to consider all of your options, including adoption. Adoption can often be a misunderstood decision. There are a lot of myths about what adoption is and how it affects those involved after the child is placed. It is important to have accurate information about adoption and the process when considering adoption for your pregnancy.

Remember, considering and/or exploring the option of adoption does not mean you are fully committed to it. All of our services are free and you can change your mind and decide that adoption is not the best choice at any point during the process until you sign legal paperwork (which is after the birth of your child).

By taking time to weigh the pros and cons of each of your options, including adoption, you will make a fully informed choice that you can be confident in. It’s your choice.

Exploring Adoption

First Care provides full licensed adoption services through its in-house agency, New Life Adoptions. The adoption process starts by meeting with one of our licensed social workers so we can learn more about your unique situation. This initial meeting is also a time for you to get your questions answered about adoption.

Here is a glance at the adoption process:

Choose A Family

Choose a Family

Once you have selected the family(ies) you would like to meet, your social worker will help you set up a time to meet with them, help prepare you for the meeting, and also be present with you during the initial meeting. Meeting families gives you a chance to get to know them before you decide if they are the right family.

Delivery and Placement

Delivery and Placement

With the help of your social worker, you can decide what your time in the hospital will look like. If you desire, the adoptive family may be included in this time. Your social worker will visit you in the hospital, answer any questions you may have and help you navigate your feelings during this time. Once you and the baby are ready to leave the hospital, the baby can go home with the adoptive family. If you need more time to make a decision, New Life Adoptions has licensed families to provide interim care for your child while you continue to meet with your social worker and make a plan.

Legal Paperwork

Legal Paperwork

In Minnesota, birth parents voluntarily sign consents to adoption between 72 hours and 60 days after the child is born. Once signed, there is a 10 business day period until your consents to adoption are final. During this time, we will continue to provide support as you finalize your adoption decision and your openness agreement with the adoptive family.

Ongoing Support

Ongoing Support

After placement, you will receive ongoing counseling and other post adoption services, as needed. These services are available to you whenever a need may arise, even years down the road. New Life Adoptions also hosts a yearly Birth Mother event in May to honor you and your adoption decision.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I didn’t have a job, I was still a sophomore in high school, and my baby didn’t have a Dad in the picture. I realized I couldn’t do it by myself. I wanted my daughter to know how loved she was and that she wasn’t a burden. I wanted her to have everything, a stable home with stable parents. Through adoption, I knew I was handing my daughter to someone who was going to love her just as much as I loved her, so that was really powerful for me. I chose an open adoption so I could be involved in my daughter’s life.”
